Who Qualifies for Hospice Care?
Hospice isn’t only for cancer patients.
Only about 1/3 of the people Hospice of the Piedmont cares for have a cancer diagnosis. Most are living with other serious illnesses – heart disease, COPD, dementia, kidney failure, ALS, Parkinson’s.
Hospice is about more than a diagnosis. It’s about providing comfort-focused care, expert symptom management and family support to anyone living with a life-limiting illness.
If you’re wondering whether your loved one meets the hospice requirements and eligibility criteria – it’s probably the right time to start the conversation and learn more.

Understanding Hospice Cost and Coverage
Hospice care is fully covered for most patients.
Most advanced and chronic illnesses are a qualifying diagnosis for hospice. When your loved one meets the hospice requirements, hospice care is fully covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or most private insurance plans. The Medicare Hospice Benefit pays 100% of hospice services for eligible patients.
For patients without insurance, Hospice of the Piedmont provides care regardless of someone’s ability to pay. Generous gifts from our community help make this commitment possible. If cost is the only thing holding you back, please call us first.
