A monthly interactive therapeutic art workshop for adults who desire to explore creative ways to work through and express their grief. (This program also takes place on a monthly basis at Hospice of the Piedmont in High Point. Click here to learn more.)
Body Mapping
Grief is known to stir up difficult emotions, but it can also manifest in physical ways. A body map is a technique used to help identify where we experience emotions within our bodies. Participants will learn to identify their emotions and use colors, shapes, and symbols to pinpoint them within a body outline.

Story Flowers
Telling your grief story can be a powerful statement for yourself and others. Using coffee filters and watercolors, participants will create flowers to symbolically hold names, memories, and special messages related to their loved ones. The idea is to transform what was lost and carry it forward in a new and transformative way.

What’s on your plate?
Managing life while caring for a loved one can be extremely stressful. After death, things do not get much easier as families scramble to plan funerals, memorials, and burials all while grieving the loss of a loved one. Participants will use the analogy of “having a full plate” to create a visual representation of their responsibilities then learn strategies to improve time-management, reduce stress, and balance life with grief-related tasks.

Memory Boxes
Although we lose a physical presence when someone dies, we don’t lose our connection to who they were and what they meant to us. Memories are one of the best ways for us to keep them alive for ourselves and future generations. Participants will use collage materials to decorate a memory box that will hold special mementos to remind them of their loved ones.

Wishing Flags
Wishing flags are based on an old Tibetan tradition of writing personal messages on small, colorful flags then hanging them outdoors for the wind to spread these blessings and good fortune into the air. Participants will use fabric and paints to create wishing flags filled with messages of peace, compassion, strength, wisdom, and hope that are needed when grieving a loss. These messages can be intended for themselves, loved ones, or the deceased.

Grief Mandalas
Mandala is a Sanskrit word that translates to “sacred circle.” It is often comprised of geometric patterns that symbolize healing and self-expression. Participants in this workshop will create a simple version of a mandala to help explore internal challenges and increase focus on the present moment.

Identity Collage
It can be difficult to see grief as only one part of who we are rather than our whole being. Identity collages allow us to take a closer look at how grief and identity impact each other. Participants will create an identity collage using various materials to form mirror images of their grief versus themselves.

Grief Masks
Grief can cause us to feel so overwhelmed that we begin to hide our true feelings and pretend that everything is okay. While these figurative masks protect us from our pain, they can also hinder our ability to heal. Participants will use paper masks to depict how they feel inside compared to what they show others on the outside.

Hospice of Randolph – 416 Vision Drive, Asheboro
Gratitude Tree
When you have had a rough year, it can be difficult to find any positives. Losing a loved one presents us with a reality where joy and happiness seem so far out of reach. Participants will use oil pastels and watercolors to create an image of a gratitude tree based on the people and things they value most in life. Moments of gratitude in the midst of adversity has the ability to pull our focus towards what remains rather than become consumed by what we lost.

Journey Map
It is just as important to look at what is gained as it is to acknowledge what was lost. A journey map allows us to see just how far we have come in our grief journeys and celebrate even the smallest of achievements. Participants will use symbols, colors, and images to create a visual timeline of their grief journey highlighted with many ups and downs.
